Substack: Share Your Life Abroad & Earn

For years, missionaries have faithfully shared updates through church presentations, printed letters, and email updates. There’s something special about those traditions: photo boards in fellowship halls, handwritten notes, and slideshows after Sunday service.
But let’s be honest. Things have changed. Life has gotten busy. Churches have all kinds of activities now, many have sadly eclipsed missions in the minds and hearts of folks who want to connect and help but don't know where to find you.
People want to stay connected. There are many people who care deeply about what you’re doing. They want to know what you're doing and how God is moving where you are serving.
That’s where a simple, modern tool like Substack can step in and make things easier and simpler for both you and your supporters.
Think of Substack as a blend between a blog and an email list, designed to help you share your life and ministry in a natural, ongoing way.
Instead of waiting months to send a big update, you can post once or twice a week, even just a few paragraphs is fine. Even a quick post with your favorite ten photos and a short note is great.
Don't overthink is. Write a quick testimony from the field, a devotional, a story about someone you met, or a prayer request. These small, consistent updates help people feel like they’re walking alongside you, not just hearing from you occasionally. This is where connection is built.
Over time, this builds a real bond. Your supporters aren’t just reading reports. They’re witnessing what God is doing in real time.
It's not the church who will share you with people now. Missionaries are connecting with fellow believers one at a time.
One of the most helpful features is how Substack delivers your posts straight to your readers’ inboxes. When someone subscribes, they don’t have to remember to check a website. Your updates come to them automatically.
So many folks already use Substack and follow other writers, so it fits naturally into habits they already have. As of recent years, Substack has grown to millions of active users and hundreds of thousands of writers, which means it’s not just a niche platform, it’s a place where people are already paying attention.
And if you’re not tech-savvy, don’t worry. It’s designed to be simple. If you can write an email, you can use Substack.
Another bonus is how easy it is to share your page. You can post your Substack link on social media, text it to friends, or include it in your church communications. Substack also helps push out your content to people who may be interested, meaning your ministry updates could reach beyond your immediate circle.
It’s a quiet but powerful way to expand awareness of what God is doing in your mission field.
There’s also flexibility in how people support you. Substack allows readers to subscribe for free or choose to give a monthly or yearly amount if they want to support your writing and ministry. You can customize this with multiple price points. Either way, it gives your supporters an easy, built-in way to stay engaged.
And perhaps one of the most meaningful parts: your Substack becomes a living record of your mission. You can share photos, videos, answered prayers, and everyday moments.
Over time, it turns into a testimony, not just for others, but for you too. On hard days, you can scroll back and remember what Jesus has already done. On joyful days, you have a place to celebrate and invite others into that joy.
At the end of the day, Substack isn’t about technology, it’s about staying connected and bringing what God is doing in parts of the world people may never see to their phone, ipad, or computer. We overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. When you share what Jesus is doing, you strengthen the faith of others and inspire a new generation of missionaries.
God WILL lay on people's hearts to subscribe and support you if it's His will, but you must create and cast your net.
Help the people who love you stay close, pray specifically, and rejoice with you as God moves. And if all it takes is a couple of paragraphs and a few minutes every few days, that’s a pretty beautiful trade.
More tips are coming as well as an easy Substack schedule, post ideas, and how to get your YWAMers and staff in on the action to help bring your page to life.
God bless you, family. We are with you and praying for you.
